Erik Scull joined the music faculty as Adjunct Faculty in 2005. A graduate of the MSMT program at the IU School of Music Program at IUPUI, Erik also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music (Piano Concentration) from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Building on his musical foundation, Erik has developed skills in the areas of multimedia production and web programming, and currently serves as Multimedia and Digital Technology Specialist with IU Digital Media Services, a division of UITS.

Erik maintains a consistent performing and recording schedule as a guitarist and keyboardist in the Indianapolis area. A full time member of the Dane Clark Band, Erik has also appeared with Donovan, John Mellencamp, Carl Storie, and many others.

Randy Albright earned undergraduate degrees in both Theatre (B.A., Indiana University, Bloomington 1986) and Music (Associate’s Degree in Audio Engineering, Indiana University School of Music, Bloomington, 1992).

While studying at Indiana University, Randy worked for three years as assistant to Dr. Glenn Gass, the originator of Indiana University’s Rock History Studies Program. In 1999, Randy was hired as adjunct instructor to teach Rock History classes at IUPUI. Upon completing his Master’s degree in 2002, Randy joined the Music department full time as Lecturer.

Beginning in 2003, Albright began producing the online versions of the Rock History classes. These web-based classes are among the most popular of IUPUI’s online class offerings. Albright’s Music of Jimi Hendrix course was first offered at IUPUI in 2001, making it the first college class about Jimi Hendrix to be offered in the USA.

Albright is also a musician and songwriter: his performance of original composition Shasta Daisy was a highlight of the 1992 Live From Bloomington album.

Pianist, composer and arranger Steve Allee is a veteran of more than 35 years on the music scene, working principally in jazz, writing and performing for syndicated radio programs, network television and motion pictures, and as a music educator.

All of his career facets have blended into a distinct musical that has a very strong visual, almost cinematic flavor because of his skill in capturing or reinforcing important moods or visual elements inspire his projects.

Steve has released six CDs as a leader, the two most recent being his trio recordings, Dragonfly (June 2008) and Colors (April 2007) on the Owl Studios label that are artful collaborations with bassist Bill Moring and drummer Tim Horner. Saxophonists Rich Perry and Rob Dixon appear on select tracks. In his liner notes for Dragonfly, jazz journalist Ken Franckling noted that “From start to finish, Ðragonfly makes it clear that this is a band in which each of the players finds their interaction to be exhilarating…. this trio is all about making the most of the journey – as the best jazz should.”

A native son and longtime resident of Indianapolis, Indiana, Steve was fortunate to grow up in the hometown of many jazz greats, including brothers Wes, Buddy and Monk Montgomery, Slide Hampton, J.J. Johnson, David Baker, Freddie Hubbard and Melvin Rhyne, among others.

His playing style has a touch, sparkling clarity and improvisational variations reminiscent of the late Bill Evans, as well as a very strong blues influence that Steve credits to his exposure to Buddy Montgomery and Horace Silver.

Steve began his professional career at age 19 with the Buddy Rich Orchestra before he was drafted into military service during the Vietnam War. Through the years, he has worked with a veritable “Who’s Who” of major jazz artists across the United States and abroad. Recent performances include the Rufus Reid Trio, The Randy Brecker Quartet, David “Fathead” Newman, John Clayton and The Rich Perry Quartet. He also leads a big band that performs regularly in Indianapolis.

Steve’s big band CD, Downtown Blues, with bassist John Clayton and drummer John VonOhlen, was nominated for a Grammy® award. Allee's first national solo CD, The Magic Hour, released on Noteworthy Records, landed at No. 14 on the Gavin national radio poll. The pianist with the Rufus Reid Trio, their CD’ “Out Front”, on the Montema label, hit the #1 spot on the Jazz Week radio polls.

His other musical accomplishments included being commissioned to write and conduct a four-movement work for the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra to celebrate the 100th anniversary of The Indianapolis Museum of Art. His score for the film, "New York in the Fifties," was performed live at Switzerland’s acclaimed Montreux Jazz Festival. Steve was co-director and arranger for a J.J. Johnson Tribute Concert featuring trombonist Slide Hampton at the Indy Jazz Fest in 2001.

His writing credits include soundtracks for "New York In The Fifties," the film inspired by the Dan Wakefield book of the same title, as well as "Something To Cheer About," a documentary starring Halle Berry and Oscar Robertson that focused on the 1954-55 Crispus Attucks Tigers basketball team on which NBA legend Robertson played in high school in Indianapolis. It was the first all-black high school team ever to win a state championship – and the team that changed the face of basketball forever.

Steve’s performance and network television writing credits with Los Angeles Post Music© include music for “Chicago Hope,” “Mad About You,” “Martha Stewart,” “Friends,” “Nash Bridges,” “NYPD Blue,” “Dharma and Greg,” and “Touched by an Angel.”

This busy artist also is the music director for the nationally syndicated, Indianapolis-based comedy-variety radio show, “The Bob and Tom Show,” with which he has co-produced more than 50 albums over the past 25 years.

As an educator, Steve has taught or lectured at several college and university music programs over the years, including the University of Cincinnati, University of Louisville, University of Illinois, University of Missouri, Morehead College, Purdue University, Butler University, University of Indianapolis, Indiana State University, Drury College, and Florida International University. He now teaches at the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshops and other master classes and workshops during the year.

Steve was commissioned by renowned drummer, percussionist and educator, Steve Houghton, to write a percussion Concerto for Wind Ensemble. The piece, “Passages” will be premiered in Constitution Hall in Washington DC by the US Army Wind Ensemble.

John Alvarado received his Bachelor of Music in Classical Guitar Performance from DePaul University and his Master of Music in Performance from Arizona State University. He has performed in Master Class with Stephen Robinson, Eliot Fisk, John Duarte, and Javier Garcia Moreno. A strong advocate for the guitar as a concert instrument, Alvarado is a founding member of the Indiana Society for the Classical Guitar.

Alvarado has been an active supporter of contemporary music, participating in the Chicago Young Composers Festival, Northwestern University New Music Festival, DePaul’s New Music program as well as co-founding New Media Productions, a Non-Profit organization designed to support, create, and provide a venue for modern performance art. He has also performed in premiers of works by Sergio Assad, Dusan Bogdanovic, John Bauer, and Dave Burdick.

Alvarado’s performance expands beyond the traditional classical repertoire and includes a focus on the contemporary music of Latin American composers as well as the study of flamenco music. He has studied flamenco guitar with Diego Alonso Aste and is a founding member of the flamenco music and dance ensemble Flamenco de Indianapolis.

He is a regular performer in Indianapolis, having played at venues such as the Indiana History Center, Indianapolis Art Center, Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, Indianapolis Artsgarden, IUPUI, and Butler University as well as numerous performances on the radio show, Indy Arts and Entertainment. In 2008 he was awarded the Innovative Artist award from Indiana University for his work.

In addition to performing, Mr. Alvarado is an active educator. He has taught for Arizona State University, Prescott College, Phoenix College, Mesa Arts Center, and Marian College. He is currently Trustee Lecturer of Guitar for the IUPUI Department of Music and Arts Technology.

Rene Anderson, voice teacher, earned her master’s degree from the University of North Texas, specializing in voice pedagogy, and her B.A. degree from Indiana State University, concentrating in voice and music education. Her pedagogical interests focus on vocal technique, vocal resonance, styles of singing, and vocal health. She began working at IUPUI in 1998, teaching V100, and maintains a private voice studio through the IUPUI Music Academy. She has taught choral and general music for Carmel Clay Schools and Indianapolis Public Schools. As a performer, she has given solo recitals and sung with the Indianapolis Opera Company, Footlite Musicals, the Edyvean Repertory Theatre, and in church choirs. Operatic and musical theater roles include Susannah in The Marriage of Figaro, Sgt. Sarah Brown in Guys and Dolls, Hope Harcourt in Anything Goes, and Little Mary in Little Mary Sunshine. She has directed music for shows at Bishop Chatard High School, Footlite Musicals, Rural Alliance for the Arts, and has staged her own solo performances, and has directed both adult and children’s church choirs.

Ms. Anderson is an active member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and Indianapolis Matinee Musicale, encouraging her students to compete in contests, auditions, and recitals.

Douglas Babb is an electronic musician, performer, composer and educator. He began his career in 1971 at Indiana University studying under John Eaton, Xenakis and Robert Moog, inventor of the music synthesizer. His work over the last 40 years includes thousands of performances at schools, museums and civic events; numerous commissions and installations; corporate endorsements, industry recognition, and a faculty position at IUPUI, where he teaches courses on “Music Technology,” “The Beatles,” and “Pink Floyd.” Babb also teaches “The History of Rock and Roll” and “The Beatles” at Marian University.

Mr. Babb was a Performing Artist with Young Audiences for over 30 years and continues as a Master Teaching Artist with VSA Indiana where he works with challenged and at-risk populations. He is currently in residence providing music activities to the autistic, learning disabled and incarcerated, as well as those in recovery and in behavioral modification programs at several diverse facilities around Indiana. Douglas offers a weekly “Music Tech” class to urban youth and the visually impaired, providing much needed computer training as well as a safe, creative and supportive environment in which to compose and record music.

Douglas, also known as The MIDI Guy, created “M.I.D.I. For Beginners,” a series of workshops designed for musicians, music educators and the technologically challenged. He regularly presents clinics on GarageBand, MIDI, and Music Technology. Recent activities include the expansion of TWANG! Studios, home to a myriad of projects, clinics and community outreach programs offering job training, apprenticeships and mentoring.

IBM and The Getty Foundation named Mr. Babb among the “100 Most Influential People in the Arts.” Douglas is also an active voting member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS) and has been a presenter at Grammy in the Schools for both the New York City and Chicago Chapters.

Babb’s music commissions at IUPUI include the grand opening of the Informatics Building and the Ball Gardens Renovations, and he has performed often for The I.U. Foundation. Douglas was named the Official Musician and Ambassador of the Arts for The Pan American Games in 1986.

Mr. Babb was the first curator for The Bob Moog Memorial Foundation for Electronic Music and is a recognized expert on the history of electronic music technology. He is working on numerous complex publishing projects based on his extensive collection of instruments, media and ephemera, including a book of Moog related album covers.

Showcasing his vast collection of vintage LP’s and eclectic knowledge of music genres, Babb is in residence at Smee’s Place, appearing as Dr. Spin, “The World’s Only All Vinyl DJ,” where he plays classic and seldom heard music for 7 hours every Friday night.

Darrell Bailey is Professor of Music in the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology at IUPUI. Prior to that, he was the founding executive associate dean of the Indiana University School of Informatics where he oversaw the process of approval for three degree programs in Media Arts and Science as well as master's and Ph.D. programs in Informatics. Earlier, he managed the approval and implementation of the School of Music's Master of Science degree in music technology, and was director of the program from 1989-1997.

Bailey's research is on the applied application of music technology in teaching and learning. He has presented at over 75 conferences, workshops, and seminars throughout the US and abroad. From 1991-1997 he chaired the International Computer Music Technology Conference and Workshop held in Indianapolis. He is the author of the Active Listening Guides for Music Listening Today (Cengage Publishing), now in its 4th edition. This is the single largest compilation of full synchronized analysis of music of western civilization, including 89 works and over 6 hours of music. His past grant activity has included a $1.25 million grant from the Lilly Endowment to oversee the development of comprehensive media health education applications for the Ruth Lilly Health Education Center in Indianapolis.

His international work has included academic exchanges and partnership development at Sun Yat-Sen University, the University of Bremen, and Tianjin University. Other international work has been with Moi University in Kenya, and orthopedic patient record management with Operation Walk in Cuba, Nicaragua, and Guatemala, and Internet2 collaborations.

He holds three degrees from Oberlin College, a B.A. in music, a B.Mus. in organ performance, and an M.M.T. in music. His Ed.D. degree is from the University of Illinois.

David Baranyk, Department of Music and Arts Technology at IUPUI lecturer, teaches guitar, mandolin, banjo and dobro. He attended Oakland University where he studied guitar with Dr. Robert Facko. He also attended Indiana University where he studied guitar with Richard Creveling, completing undergraduate studies with Brett Terrell at Butler University. In addition, David studied percussion with Paul Berns, principal percussionist of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, and Dr. John Hill at Butler University. David completed a Master of Science in Music Technology at IUPUI.

Mr. Baranyk has performed in musical theatre orchestras and bands for the productions of Little Shop of Horrors, Godspell, West Side Story, Three Penny Opera and others. He has hosted and performed in master classes and workshops given by Sergio and Odair Assad, Paul O'Dette, Don Ross, Bobby Broom, Frank Vignola, Stanley Jordan and Jim Hall.

David currently plays in groups performing jazz and folk music, including Celtic and Blue Grass. In addition to his work at IUPUI, David is on the music faculties of Wabash College and the Center for the Performing and Visual Arts Indianapolis Public School Magnet Program at Broad Ripple High School.

Sean Bowman, Trumpet, is originally from the Maryland/Washington, D.C. area and has been studying and teaching trumpet for over 15 years. Graduating from the University of Maryland in 2004 with a Bachelor's degree in music performance, Sean has studied and performed with many of the premier classical trumpet players on the east coast. He has also played as a freelance trumpet player around the Washington, D.C. area in orchestral and chamber music settings with the NSO, the World Youth Symphony Orchestra, and the American Youth Philharmonic. Sean is currently pursuing his Masters degree from IUPUI in music technology.

Beth Brooks holds a Master of Science in Music Technology degree from IUPUI and a Bachelor of Music Education degree from IU Bloomington. She has completed all three levels of certification for the Organization of American Kodaly Educators at IU Bloomington. She is actively involved in the Indiana Kodaly Educators, OAKE, and the International Kodaly Society. Beth taught band and strings in the Indianapolis Public Schools until moving to a vocal/general position in 1991. She has been at the same IPS School, Eleanor Skillen Elementary #34, since that time.

Beth is a recipient of the Metropolitan Opera Guild's grant for Creating Original Opera, in which she collaboratively produced an opera with her students and another teacher for four years in a row. She is also the recipient of the Lilly Teacher Creativity Fellowship for study at the Edinburgh Arts Festival in Scotland and the Indiana Department of Education Chinese Cultural Fellowship for study in China and Hong Kong. She has also been a presenter at the Midwest Society for Ethnomusicology conference at Western Kentucky University and has twice served as clinician for the Start the Music early childhood education conference at IUPUI.

Debra Burns is an Associate Professor and Coordinator of Music Therapy Programs at IUPUI. She is an active member of the American Music Therapy Associa­tion as a member of the National AMTA Research Committee and a member of the Journal of Music Therapy editorial board. Prior to joining the faculty at IUPUI in 2004, Dr. Burns completed a postdoctoral research fellowship funded by the National Institutes of Health, National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Her research training focused on alleviating symptom distress and improving the quality of life of cancer patients in active treatment. She maintains an active research program exploring the various benefits of music therapy for cancer patients across the disease trajectory. She has presented nationally and internationally on these topics. Dr. Burns received her Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Glenville State College, her Master of Music in Music Therapy at Illi­nois State University and her PhD in Music Education and Music Therapy from the University of Kansas.

Patrick Byrket teaches M174 Music for the Listener, Z320 History of American Popular Music online, and Z320 History of Rock ‘n’ Roll 70s and 80s. Patrick received his B.S. in New Media Arts & Science and a Masters of Music and Arts Technology from IUPUI. As a singer/songwriter, Patrick has been an active musician in the Indianapolis area. He has played with numerous local bands trying out for reality TV shows, such as “America's Got Talent,” “The Voice,” “The One,” and “Rock Star.” Patrick loves to teach music history: “You have to know where something comes from to fully understand the origin of the music.”

E. J. Choe, Assistant Professor of Music, is the Director of the IUPUI Music Academy. She also teaches applied piano, keyboard class, and music appreciation at IUPUI. A native of Seoul, Korea, she made a televised debut as a guest pianist for the Korean Broadcasting System Network at age six. She continues to return to Korea to give concerts and master classes at Yeonsei University, Kangwon University, Chun Nam University, and Honam University. While growing up in Colorado, she was a prizewinner in numerous competitions including CSMTA, MTNA, and Fort Collins International Competition. She has appeared as guest soloist with the Denver Philharmonic Orchestra, Fort Collins Symphony Orchestra, and Arvada Symphony Orchestra. Her studies include a B.M. and M.M. from the University of Colorado at Boulder and a Doctoral of Music in Piano, Music Literature and Pedagogy from Indiana University at Bloomington. She studied piano with Michele Block, Larry Graham, Doris Lehnert, and Robert Spillman. While studying at Indiana University, she collaborated with such artists as world-class opera singers Martina Arroyo, James King, Giorgio Tozzi, Roy Samuelsen, and Virginia Zeani.

In addition to her career as a pianist, vocal coaching led her to serve as an opera coach/music director at the Aspen Music Festival Opera Center; Centro Studi Italiani in Urbania, Italy; Indiana University Opera Center; and DePauw University. She also collaborated and lectured/performed at the Music Teachers National Association national conference in 2003.

Miri Chung received her Master of Music in Performance from Yale University and her Bachelor of Music in Classical Violin Performance from Manhattan School of Music. Ms. Chung also studied music therapy at New York University. While she was working as a music therapist in New York City and Chicago, she also continued to teach and perform as a soloist and as a chamber musician. Since relocating to Indiana in 2007, she has been teaching at IUPUI as well as in her private studio in Carmel, Indiana. Currently, she is a violinist of The 3 beats Piano Trio and Mobius String Quartet where she performs actively throughout the Indianapolis area.

Mr. Copeland has had extensive teaching experience with various instrumental music programs at all age levels. He is a well-known educator, consultant, and adjudicator in the music education field. He has taught in the West Washington, Winamac, Martinsville, Plainfield, and currently the Perry Township school systems. Mr. Copeland is an adjunct professor for the Department of Music and Arts Technology at IUPUI. He is in his 9th season as the director of the IUPUI Jaguar Pep Band for the Men's and Women's basketball teams. The Jaguar Pep Band is an active performing group with local, regional, and national exposure.

Mr. Copeland received his Bachelor of Music Education from the School of Music at Indiana University in Bloomington. He recently received his Master of Arts degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Indianapolis.

An artist who presents a “riveting performance” (Sequenza 21), Scott Deal’s appearances include venues, festivals and conferences in North America and Europe. He has premiered dozens of solo, chamber and mixed media works, and can be heard on the Albany, Centaur, Cold Blue and SCI labels. His recent recording of the music of John Luther Adams has been described as “a soaring, shimmering exploration of texture and tone...an album of resplendent mood and incredible scale” (Musicworks). Continually inspired by new and emerging artistic technologies, Deal is the founder of the Telematic Collective, an Internet performance group comprised of artists and computer specialists. In this capacity he has performed at Supercomputing Global, SIGGRAPH, Chicago Calling, Ingenuity Festival, Internet2 and with groups that include ART GRID, Another Language, Digital Worlds Institute and the Helsinki Computer Orchestra.

Dr. Deal is a Professor of Music and Director of the Donald Tavel Arts Technology Research Center. He is a Research Affiliate for the Arctic Region Supercomputing Center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, where he was a Professor of Music from 1995-2007. He also serves as artist-faculty on the Summer Institute for Contemporary Performance Practice at the New England Conservatory.

He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from the University of Miami, a Master of Music degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Cameron University. As a student, he was past winner or finalist in several prestigious competitions, including the Music Teacher's National Association Collegiate Artist Competition, the Cincinnati Conservatory Concerto Competition, the Percussive Arts Society International Solo Marimba Competition and the Louise McMahon International Competition. Scott Deal serves regularly as a writer, lecturer and clinician. He is a Yamaha Artist, a Black Swamp Percussion Artist, and endorses Sabian Cymbals.

Michael Drews is a composer, sound artist and computer musician. His work explores unconventional narrative strategies created from transforming contextual identity and the expressive power of cultural artifacts found in particular sonic and visual materials. Present throughout Drews’ work is an interest in performance-based computer virtuosity and improvisational applications of computer technology that expand traditional ideas of musical performance and creativity. Drews is a member of computer-acoustic ensemble, Big Robot and the experimental-electronica duo, Mana2.

Performances of Drews’ compositions have been featured at SEAMUS, Electronic Music Midwest, NYC Electronic Music Festival, Studio 300, PASIC, Super Computing Global, IASPM-Canada and throughout United States. Drews holds degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (D.M.A.), Cleveland State University (M.MUS.) and Kent State University (B.A.). He resides with his family in Indianapolis and is Assistant Professor of Music at Indiana University-Indianapolis (IUPUI).

Tina Everts is the Administrative Support Specialist for the Department of Music and Arts Technology at IUPUI. She has been working for the department and the Music Academy since February 2000. Tina received an Associates Degree in Administration from Indiana Business College in May 2000.

Yvonne is the Senior Administrative Secretary for the Department of Music and Arts Technology at IUPUI and serves as Assistant to the Director of the IUPUI Music Academy. She received an Associate of Arts in General Studies from Indiana University, Bloomington, in December 2003 and is currently working on her Bachelor’s in General Studies, with a concentration in the Humanities.

Bassist Jack Helsley is an active performer on the Indianapolis music scene. After receiving a Bachelors Degree in Music from the University of Louisville, he toured extensively throughout Europe, Africa and the U.S. with the United States Air Force Band. As a freelance bassist, he has been featured on numerous recordings of jazz, pop, rock, and country artists, and has performed with such notable talents as Michael Brecker, Jeff Watts, Joey Calderazzo, Randy Brecker, Benny Golsen, Ernie Watts, Bob Berg, Lynne Arriale, David Baker and Jamey Aebersold. He holds a Master of Music degree in Jazz Studies from Indiana University, and is currently a member of the Buselli/Wallarab Jazz Orchestra and the Frank Glover Quartet. He is currently the Jazz Bass Instructor at DePauw University and Anderson University, and a Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of Indianapolis. He was recently the Jazz and Classical bass professor at Western Illinois University. He is also the co-host of the Jazz Radio Show “Have You Heard” on WICR-FM.

Loy Hetrick started playing trombone at age 10 in Fremont, Nebraska where he was a student of Robert Olsen. After graduating from high school, he attended the University of Nebraska where he studied with Vernon Forbes. During his time in college he was blessed to travel with a professional orchestra to Scotland and England. He also was a charter member of the Plymouth Brass, a resident church ensemble, playing with them from 1977 to 1979. After college he taught junior high band and orchestra. He continued to play professionally by winning the Second Trombone position in the Omaha Symphony.

In 1983 Loy and his wife, Cynthia, moved to Indiana so he could pursue a graduate degree at Indiana University. There he studied trombone with Dee Stewart, Lewis VanHaney, Keith Brown and Ed Anderson. He also studied improvisation under David Baker and played lead trombone in the top jazz ensemble. While at I.U. he was an Assistant Instructor and later taught low brass at both Purdue and Butler Universities. After finishing a Master of Music degree in trombone performance they moved to Indianapolis that he might work as a free-lance musician. Since then, he has toured the U.S. and Canada with many performers including Andy Williams, Mel Torme, Johnny Mathis, Barry Manilow and Natalie Cole. He was also a member of the Fort Wayne Philharmonic Orchestra for nine seasons.

Currently, Loy performs regularly with the Indianapolis Symphony and the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra. Much of his playing involves commercial studio work. He has recorded for Sandy Patti, the Gaither Vocal Group as well as for various music publishing companies. Other jobs include pit orchestra work for the local ballet and opera companies and the Broadway musicals that come to the Indianapolis area. He has taught private lessons for over thirty-three years. These days, he is pleased to teach applied low brass at I.U.P.U.I. in addition to the Indianapolis Academy of Fine Arts.

Alice M. Lee-Hopkins is an adjunct professor at IUPUI and an Instructor for IUPUI Music Academy.

Alice is the lead musician/choir director/organist/pianist for two churches in Indianapolis. She has 13 private piano students, and is an independent music instructor for Musikalessons.com out of New York. Alice has been employed by IUPUI for five years, and is currently an instructor for P110 – Beginning Piano, and M394 – Survey of Black American Music (online). Alice often accompanies groups such as the Athenaeum Orchestra, and the Phillips Memorial Band. Alice is often sought after for music coordination, workshops, and referrals for musicians. Alice is also an ordained minister in the AME Zion Church, and has outreach ministries in Indianapolis.

Lauren Hughes is the Assistant to the Chair of the Department of Music and Arts Technology at IUPUI. She is currently finishing a DM of Brass Pedagogy from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. She moved to Indianapolis after finishing her course work in August 2010. Her minor fields include Arts Administration and Music History. She also holds a Bachelor of Music for French horn performance from Florida State University and a Master of Music for French horn performance with a secondary concentration in Music History from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. She has substituted with many orchestras including the Columbus Symphony, Pensacola Symphony, Mobile Symphony, and Athens Symphony. Along with her playing experience she has also taught a studio of students ranging from elementary school to college.

Tom serves as an Assistant Director at the IUPUI Center for Teaching and Learning where he manages the instructional technology team, develops and implements programming initiatives centered on instructional technology and consults with faculty on the best ways to leverage instructional technology. His interest areas include online course design, music technology and social media.

He earned a M.S. in Music Technology from Indiana University at IUPUI and studied Marketing and Music at Texas Tech University. In addition to his duties at the Center for Teaching and Learning, he developed and teaches an online course on social media for the Music and Arts Technology department. Tom also performs as a bassist in the Indianapolis area and lives with his wife and two children in Fishers, Indiana.

Michele King is the Events Coordinator for the Department of Music and Arts Technology at IUPUI. She has been working for the department since December 2003. Michele received a Bachelors Degree in General Studies with a concentration of Elementary Education from Ball State University in May of 1992. She has one daughter and loves to play drums.

Mark Koenig teaches M110, Music and Computers, E241, Introduction to Music Fundamentals, and B120, Trumpet/Elective. Mark received a B.S. in Music Education from the University of Indianapolis, a Master of Music in Education and in Performance (trumpet) from Georgia State University, and has completed course work toward a Doctorate of Music Education from Indiana University. He currently teaches elementary music in the Center Grove School Corporation, and has taught at IUPUI since 1991.

As a trumpet player, Mark has been active in the Indianapolis area, performing with the Columbus Brass Quintet, the Indianapolis Brass Choir, the Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra, and the Indiana National Guard Band, where he directs the jazz band. He served 6 years in army bands, including three years with the US Army FORSCOM band, and has toured with the Jack Daniel’s Original Silver Cornet Band.

As a teacher, Mark has developed a number of strategies and lesson ideas incorporating technology in the general music classroom. He has given workshops through the Indiana Department of Education, been active in the Indiana Music Educators Association, and was chosen as one of four educators from Indiana to help develop a music component for the National Assessment of Educational Progress. He was recently named Teacher of the Year at Sugar Grove Elementary School, in the Center Grove Community School Corporation.

Roberta Lindsey, Clinical Associate Professor and Coordinator of Undergraduate Music Studies at Indiana University Purdue University - Indianapolis (IUPUI), received her Ph.D. from The Ohio State University in 1996 focusing on Aaron Copland's first orchestral work, Grohg, A Ballet in One-Act. Dr. Lindsey has numerous publications, including essays in the Reader's Guide to Music: History, Theory, and Criticism. She is also a recognized presenter in the field of Online Music Education, Technology and Music, and Music History and Literature. Her latest research has been published by Salem Press.

David B Mannell, tenor, enjoys a demanding singing career spanning opera, musical theatre, oratorio, academic and church work. A native of Topeka, Kansas, he received his Music Education degree from Emporia State University and Master’s from Indiana University. He was Director of Music for seven years for a public school district in Kansas where he taught Kindergarten through 12th grade music. He has worked with, John Wustman, Robert Shaw, John Moriarty and others.

His singing career takes him throughout the Midwest, Nation and Europe where he performs as guest soloist with regional opera houses and orchestras. He has traveled to Italy where he studied with Arrigo Pola, former voice teacher of Luciano Pavarotti.

Mannell stage directs for the educational program of the Indianapolis Opera Company, as well as being on the music faculty at Indiana State University. He has a very active private voice studio of which many of his students have received high awards regionally and locally, as well as being accepted to many outstanding universities. He is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, the Indiana NATS chapter where he is the State Treasurer and a member of Indianapolis Matinee Musicale. He has recorded four CD’s: “Songs of Praise”, “Songs of the Season” “Songs of Inspiration” and “Songs of Broadway”.

Chuiyuan Meng, Lecturer at the Department of Music and Arts Technology at IUPUI, is a concert pianist, software engineer, and web designer. He received his Bachelor of Music degree from the College of Music at Capital Normal University, Beijing, China, and his Master of Science in Music Technology degree from the Indiana University School of Music Program at IUPUI.

As a musician, Mr. Meng won several awards in various piano competitions including the No.2 and No.5 Beijing Hope Cup Piano Competitions. He has performed many concerts and recitals in China and the United States.

In addition to his musical foundation, Meng has also developed professional skills in areas of software programming, multimedia and graphic design. For the last ten years, he has been experimenting with new techniques of programming the Internet, while developing Internet software utilizing Web 2.0 and relevant Rich Internet Application technologies. He has developed a powerful set of software tools that enhance experiences for musicians and higher education students and faculty.

Mr. Meng also works as a music technology specialist for Donald Tavel Arts and Technology Research Center.

Debra Mullins has been a vocalist and entertainer with over thirty years of experience on the stage, in radio, and in the studio. Debra has performed from the southeast coast, to Detroit, Chicago and many other areas. Her work in Indianapolis ranges from the music festival circuit and local clubs, to theatre. She has been musical director for productions for the Phoenix Theatre, Theatre On the Square, and the Walker Theatre, including sound tracks created using computer technology. She is leader of the R&B band, Deb Mullins Band, and jazz trio, Deb Mullins Trio. Debra has produced her first CD project of original songs, “Killed In Cold Love” , with the Deb Mullins Band in 2001 and is working on her next CD, “Steppin’ Time”. She is completing her Master of Science Degree in Music Technology from the Indiana University School of Music Program and continues to develop her interest in multimedia and web development. Currently, she teaches Beginning Piano at Indiana University/Purdue University Indianapolis. She also teaches saxophone and clarinet for IUPUI Music Academy.

Professor Jordan Munson is a Lecturer in Music and Arts Technology at IUPUI, as well as an associate of the Donald Tavel Arts and Technology Research Center. He is a musician, composer, and multimedia artist whose work explores the boundaries of music's relationship to modern technology. His works for multimedia and percussion have been premiered at institutions such as the University of Kentucky, the University of Alaska at Fairbanks and the University of California at San Diego (UCSD). As a video artist, he has shown work at Big Car Gallery (Indianapolis) and the electro-acoustic music conference SEAMUS.

As a performer, Munson has expanded his performance repertoire to include experimental electronic work and has performed alongside artists such as Matmos and the Rempis Percussion Quartet. Often performing solo, mostly in the form of composed improvisation, he focuses on live experimental percussion and electronics. His research includes the development of new multimedia projects for Internet2 and the use of wireless devices in computer music performance.

Munson holds degrees from Indiana University in Indianapolis (M.S.M.T.) and the University of Kentucky (B.M.).

Steven Kent Murphy holds a Master of Music from Ithaca School of Music in Ithaca, NY, and a Bachelor of Music from State University of New York. Steven has taught piano for over twenty years in his home and for various academies. He enjoys teaching students of all ages.

Steven has served as accompanist for many artists, including Dana Hart, Therese Chatelaine, Susan Forbes, Erin Taylor and Julie Powers. Steve has also served as a professional dance accompanist at Cornell University, Ithaca Ballet, and Broad Ripple High School for Performing Arts.

Steve's varied experiences include accompanying for many shows, including Evita, Godspell, Menopause-the Musical and many others. He has served as principal pianist at Boggstown Cabaret and played at American Cabaret Theatre.

Steven received two grants from Cornell University to perform in concert and write the musical Quest for Paradise. He won the award of Best Theatre Score at the Theatre Association of New York State in 1996 for his incidental music to the play Top Girls by Caryl Churchill.

Steven has an album of original music available at iTunes, Another Room, where he plays his original compositions.

G. David Peters is a recognized leader in the field of computer-based education and music technology. Peters holds an MS and EdD from the University of Illinois (UIUC) and was the first to receive a doctoral degree from UIUC that specialized in computer-based music instruction.

Peters was a founding member and past President of the National Consortium for Compute-based Instruction Systems (NCCBMI) later named the Association for the Development of Computer-Based Instruction (ADCIS). He is Past-President of the Music Industry Council, an association of music businesses, manufacturers and publishers that supported the Music Educators National Conference (MENC). Peters was a member of the MENC National Executive Board from 2000 – 2002 and also served as Chair of Electronic Music and Music Technology at ten national MENC conferences. He continues to be an active clinician and consultant at the state, national and international levels.

Dr. Peters served as professor and head of music education at the University of Illinois for 17 years. As an administrator at UIUC, he served as Assistant Dean for seven years, then Associate Dean for three years of the College of Fine and Applied Arts. During his tenure at Illinois, Peters was an author and software designer for the prestigious Computer-Based Education Systems named, PLATO. He also was Director of the Plato Music Project research project.

He is founder and President of Electronic Courseware Systems, Inc. a music software publishing firm established in 1981 that specialized in instructional, interactive music software. He is the author of numerous articles, sixty music software programs and a book on computer-based music performance assessment detailing his funded research by the National Endowment of the Arts and the United States Department of Education. He is also co-author of two books related to music learning and computer instruction.

After 25 years at the University of Illinois, Peters joined the IUPUI music faculty as head of graduate studies in 1993. In 1994, he developed the Master of Science degree in Music Technology, the first graduate degree in music technology. He became Director of the IUPUI School of Music in 2001 and expanded the scope of music courses and curricula, concerts and recitals, and degree offerings in music. He recently returned to the position of Head of Graduate Studies in Music and Arts Technology at IUPUI.

Peters continues as an active performing musician, playing jazz and classical music as a symphony orchestra member.

Born and raised in Indiana, Mike Redmond has been a writer more than 30 years. His Indianapolis Star newspaper column was twice recognized for excellence by the American Association of Sunday and Feature Editors, and in 2001 was named Best General Column among large newspapers in the Hoosier Daily Press Association.

Prior to joining the Star, Redmond was an award-winning pop music critic for The Indianapolis News.

Redmond, who left daily newspapers in 2003 and now writes a column syndicated to Indiana newspapers, columns for Indianapolis Monthly, Indianapolis Woman and Indianapolis Pet Quarterly magazines, and a column posted weekly on his website, www.mikeredmondonline.com. He is a busy public speaker, with clients as diverse as Roche Diagnostics, the Indiana Association of Homes and Services for the Aging and Marriott Hotels, as well as church groups, Chambers of Commerce and his mother’s home extension club. He also teaches journalism at Butler University.

He is also an accomplished musician -- a veteran of several not-very-successful rock and roll bands who plays (or makes noise on, depending on your point of view) guitar, Dobro, pedal steel guitar, mandolin, ukulele and trombone (although, being a gentleman, he tends to leave the trombone in the case these days).

Dr. Fred J. Rees is Professor of Music, Chair, and Advisory Board Chair of the Department of Music and Arts Technology at IUPUI. He came to Indianapolis in 1999 from the University of Northern Iowa, where he developed the first graduate music education degree program in the country to be broadcast at a distance over the state`s interactive television network. He has contributed to adapting the Master of Science in Music Technology as a live, videostreamed degree program with worldwide student enrollments. He has also designed the Bachelor of Science in Music Technology degree program, that integrates music technology throughout the curriculum. Prior academic appointments included New York University and the University of Queensland (Australia). His career interests have included distance learning, string education, double bass and piano performance, and music technology.

Dr. Rees holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Southern California and a Bachelor of Science in Music Education and a performance certificate in double bass from the Crane School of Music (SUNY-Potsdam).

Erik Scull joined the music faculty as Adjunct Faculty in 2005. A graduate of the MSMT program at the IU School of Music Program at IUPUI, Erik also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music (Piano Concentration) from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Building on his musical foundation, Erik has developed skills in the areas of multimedia production and web programming, and currently serves as Multimedia and Digital Technology Specialist with IU Digital Media Services, a division of UITS.

Erik maintains a consistent performing and recording schedule as a guitarist and keyboardist in the Indianapolis area. A full time member of the Dane Clark Band, Erik has also appeared with Donovan, John Mellencamp, Carl Storie, and many others.

Jodi Sowers holds degrees in flute performance from the University of Indianapolis (BA, Summa Cum Laude, 1996), and Butler University (MM, 1998). Winner of the Frank and Madge Gerke Performance award from Mu Phi Epsilon, she was featured at the Mu Phi Epsilon International Convention at Depauw University in 1996. She has also performed as soloist at the Alpha Chi National Convention in Atlanta. Other musical experiences have included performing with Raymond Leppard and members of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra at the DeHaan Center in Mozart's D Major Concerto, as well as Bach's Brandenburg Concert No. 4 in the fall of 2006. Ms. Sowers has studied flute with Karen Moratz of the ISO, Anne Reynolds, and Nadine Asin at the Aspen Music Festival. She currently plays in the Anderson Symphony Orchestra and teaches flute, flute choir, and Introduction to Music at both the University of Indianapolis and at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. At IUPUI, she also teaches a chamber music class and frequently performs on faculty recitals in Indianapolis. Ms. Sowers has earned multiple awards for her teaching. In 2005, she was awarded the IUPUI Faculty Teaching Award for excellence in teaching; in 2006, she was the recipient of the Favorite Professor Award from the IUPUI Athletic Association, and 2008 she won the Innovative Artist Award from that institution.

Jennifer Seaver Stokes is a collaborative pianist and music educator in the greater Indianapolis area. She began her musical studies in Cleveland, Ohio and received instruction at the Cleveland Institute of Music in piano and clarinet through the College Preparatory Department. She went on to Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois where she completed a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music with piano being her primary performance instrument. She holds a Master of Music Degree in Piano Performance from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. Her teachers include Gui Mombaert, Robert Weirich and Enrica Cavallo-Gulli. She currently teaches private piano at her home and through the Music Academy at IUPUI. She is an Adjunct Faculty member of the Department of Music and Arts Technology at IUPUI where she has taught a variety of classes and is currently teaching both live and online courses. Ms. Seaver Stokes is the pianist for the University Choir at IUPUI, Kokomo Symphony and Orkestra Projekt. She regularly assists instrumentalists and vocalists with competitions, recitals and musical productions. She is the Music Director/Organist at The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd on Indianapolis’ north side.

Dr. John Vander Gheynst is Assistant Professor and is the Director of Jazz Studies at IUPUI. John is a performer, composer and conductor of both classical and jazz music. As a performer, John has played with a wide variety of artists including Kenny Garrett, Mike Stern, Delfeayo Marsailis, The Temptations, Mary Wilson, My Brother’s Keeper, The Creative Opportunity Orchestra and numerous symphony orchestras. As a composer, John has been commissioned to compose a wide variety of music for groups ranging from high school jazz ensemble to professional wind ensemble. His Day Suite, originally written for the University of Texas Jazz Orchestra, won the Downbeat award for best extended work for jazz ensemble.

At IUPUI, Dr. Vander Gheynst teaches jazz history, music business, jazz improvisation and jazz composition/arranging. He also directs the jazz ensembles.

Regina (Gina) Walker is a native of Dayton, Ohio, where she sang with Dayton Opera for several seasons. She earned a Bachelor of Music at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and a Master of Music from The University of Arizona, where she sang several major roles, including Donna Anna, the Merry Widow, The New Prioress in Dialogues of the Carmelites and Poppea in L’incoronazione di Poppea. Gina was a Western Region Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, where she earned an Honorable Mention award. Gina was a finalist in the Marjorie Lawrence International Vocal Competition, and received the Igor Gorin Grant for opera singers. Roles performed include Donna Anna, Donna Elvira, the Celestial Voice and Handmaiden to Turandot with Arizona Opera, and Aida with the Tucson Symphony. Recently, Gina sang the soprano role in The Verdi Requiem, covered the role of Ariadne in Ariadne auf Naxos with Indianapolis Opera, and sang the soprano solo in Dvorak’s Te Deum. Gina is a soprano section leader/soloist for a large Presbyterian church, maintains an active voice studio, is a member of NATS, and is an adjunct faculty member for a major university. Gina is scheduled to cover both Butterfly and Marguerite next season with Indy Opera.

RICHARD L. WALKER, JR. is Director of Percussion Studies for the Department of Music and Arts Technology at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis, where he leads the IUPUI Percussion Ensemble, Urban Percussion Ensembles, Afro‐Cuban Ensemble, and Steel Pan Ensemble. He also teaches Website Design for Musicians and Survey of African‐American Music. Prior to joining the school’s faculty in 2005, Walker was Coordinator of Music Business and Percussion Studies at Winston‐Salem State University in North Carolina.

As a performer, Walker has worked with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps, the Arkansas Symphony, the Sinfonia da Camera chamber orchestra, the Champaign‐Urbana (IL) Symphony, the Conway (AR) Civic Orchestra, and the Pine Bluff (AR) Symphony Orchestra. He is in demand as a percussion soloist and clinician, and toured Japan with a percussion ensemble that featured world‐acclaimed marimbist Keiko Abe.

Previously, Walker was Educational Marketing Manager for the Avedis Zildjian Company for North America, and continues his association with music business as an educational artist‐ endorser and clinician for Remo Drum Company, Vic Firth, Inc., and the Avedis Zildjian Company. His extensive background in music technology and computer software development led him to author an interactive CD‐ROM designed to teach snare drum rudiments to student percussionists. Walker edited Four Mallet Independence for Marimba and co‐authored Rudimental Snare Drum Grooves in 2006 and 2009 respectively, both published by Hal Leonard Corporation.

Diane Witte has a BA from Marian College and a Master of Music Education from Butler University. Her major focus was piano and voice. She has 24 years of experience as an elementary music teacher and 2 years as a middle school vocal music teacher. She has levels 1,2 and 3 of Kodaly and Orff certification. She began her training in Comprehensive Musicianship with Dr. Robert Pace in 1979 and became a consultant for the International Piano Foundation in 2000. She meets every 2 years with Dr. Pace to keep current with piano teaching techniques.

Diane maintains a private piano studio and is the president of the Indiana Federation of Music Clubs. She is the chairman for the Indianapolis South Junior Festival held at U of I each March.

Adjunct faculty member at Department of Music and Arts Technology at IUPUI. Mrs. Short is a native of Seoul, Korea and has been performing and teaching private piano professionally in the United States since 1987. She is a member of the Music Teachers National Association, the Indiana Music Teachers Association, and Pi Kappa Lambda Honorary Music Society. She earned her MM at Butler University in Indianapolis and her BM as a 4 year full scholarship recipient of the Young artist Award at Ball State University of Muncie, IN. Prior to her collegiate training in the United States, Mrs. Short's many accolades include training at the Soon-Hwa Conservatory in Seoul, Korea as the first prize winner of the National Teenager Piano Competition. Mrs. Short continues to teach Beginning Piano P110, Intro to Music Theory Z111, and serve as Music Director for Love For Christ Ministries.
